Fruit Pattern Snack Math Activity

February 16, 2015 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

I am always looking for ways to create hands on learning opportunities.  Lately my children are enjoying pattern exploration so I thought I would create a fun snack math lesson.  I picked two of their favorite fruit (and ones we usually don’t buy out of season so it would be extra special!).  All three of my children loved our Fruit Pattern Snack Math Activity!

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE FRUIT PATTERN SNACK MATH ACTIVITY

2 or 3 of your favorite fruit (we chose strawberries and watermelon chunks)
1 plate per child
1 copy per child of our Fruit Pattern Snack Math Activity Sheet
corresponding crayon colors (we choose red to represent the strawberries and pink to represent the watermelon)

AREAS OF DEVELOPMENT

mathematics (exploring patterns, counting, 1-to-1 correspondence, representing pattern on paper)
language development
sensory exploration (touch, taste)
nutrition (healthy eating habits)

TIME FOR THE FRUIT PATTERN SNACK MATH ACTIVITY!

Prior to introducing the activity I cut up the strawberries and watermelon into small chunks and put them on two separate plates.

so much fun eating delicious food during the fruit pattern snack math activity

I introduced the activity by first reviewing what a simple pattern is.  We talked about the different ways we could use the strawberries and watermelon to create a pattern that repeats.  Next I gave each of my children a plate and had them use the fruit to create a pattern.  When they were done I had them repeat the pattern out loud.  Now, here comes the tricky part!  Before they could eat their delicious snack they had to represent the pattern they created on paper.  Using the Fruit Pattern Snack Math Activity Sheet and the crayons my kids did a great job recreating the patterns.

Once they completed the worksheet it was time to eat!  We love yummy math lessons!

We had so much fun with this Fruit Pattern Snack Math Activity!
