We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is one of my favorite stories to explore with children. The repetition and rhythm of the language make it perfect for children to participate with the reader. The obstacles in nature that the family come upon while on their bear hunt and the safe expressions of fear of finding the bear lends itself perfectly to dramatic play for preschoolers. For this round of Preschool Book Club we are focusing on bringing the different nature experiences to life with Bear Hunt Sensory Collages.

TIME TO MAKE THE BEAR HUNT SENSORY COLLAGES!
Begin by reading We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Introduce the Bear Hunt Sensory Collages by setting up stations with a piece of cardboard and containers of grass, dirt, glitter (for snow), tinted water (for the river) and a pipette or paint brush for the water.
My children approached their collages in very different ways. At age three my daughters were all about the sensory experience. They loved the idea of using “real” materials for their collages and blending the materials on their cardboard, with lots of glue of course!
Quinn, age 5, wanted to follow the sequence of the book for his collage. He requested that I read the book again and we slowed down as the family approached each natural obstacle so that he could add the material to his collage.
Always the actor, Quinn became the bear too!
Our Bear Hunt Sensory Collages turned out to be a really fun way to explore the book through play. Are they the prettiest collages you’ve ever seen? Of course, not! But so much learning occurred during this activity and most importantly the kids loved the experience!
