Watercolor Painting Collages

April 15, 2014 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

We are crazy for liquid watercolor paintings these days!  We loved making our Homemade Watercolor Alphabet Chart and now eagerly make painting after gorgeous painting.  We decided to take some of the paintings that are piling up and cut them into different sized rectangles to make Watercolor Painting Collages.  A great way to reuse paintings!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE WATERCOLOR PAINTING COLLAGES

watercolor paper
liquid watercolors (click here to purchase)
paintbrushes
scissors
glue
construction paper (we used black)

AREAS OF DEVELOPMENT ENHANCED THROUGH WATERCOLOR PAINTING COLLAGES

fine motor development
color exploration
artistic expression
creativity
shape recognition
spatial awareness
language development
Begin by creating watercolor paintings if you do not already have some handy.  Once dry cut the watercolor paintings into a variety of rectangles.  Set up a collage station with the watercolor rectangles, glue and one piece of black construction paper per child.
Give children the freedom to explore the materials.  Like with all children’s artwork the main focus should be on the process of creating the art rather than the end product.  Focus your language on what your child is doing.  “Charlotte, look at the way you are putting the glue on the watercolor paper and then sticking it on the black paper. I notice you are using a lot of blue and red papers.”

Give your children the opportunity to explore the watercolor painting collages as long as they want.  Some day this may be two minutes.  Other days they may spend 20 minutes.  Honor where your children are in the moment.
