Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Playdough

May 30, 2013 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

Since my girls loved the Oh, Mr. Sun Playdough I wanted to create another playdough experience based on a song. As my girls sat on the stairs singing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” I pictured the perfect corresponding playdough. Dark blue with silver glitter making a magical starry night is the perfect Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Playdough.

TIME TO MAKE TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR PLAYDOUGH

Pour first five ingredients into a large saucepan and stir together. This is a great opportunity to include your children. Show them how to measure the ingredients and pour them in.

More than one child? Have them take turns pouring ingredients and stirring. This is an easy opportunity to practice basic counting, verbal directions and patience. We sing “We stir and we stir and we stop. We stir and we stir and we stop. We stir and we stir and we stir and we stir, we stir and we stir and we stop. Next person!” It’s a simple song that everyone can learn quickly and helps manage turn taking. Add blue food coloring and stir.

Add lots of silver glitter!

Move the mixture to the stove top and cook on medium heat constantly stirring. In the beginning the playdough mixture will look like very thick pancake batter.

Continue to stir until a ball forms. Remove from heat and cool on a counter top. Be careful! The playdough will be very hot.

Once warm or cool to the touch your playdough is ready. Introduce the playdough with the song chart, star cookie cutters and rolling pins. Sing the song as you explore with the playdough cutting out stars with the cutters.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are? Up above the world so high like a diamond in the sky. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are?

My girls loved our Twinkle Little Star Playdough. After singing a few times they happily transitioned the play to running a bakery making star cookies. A perfect morning with my girls!
