I’ve never been a huge Valentine’s Day person, but once I became a teacher and a mom Valentine’s Day became one more day to be creative. As a parent one of my main goals is to teach my children how to care for and give back to others. In the days leading up to Valentine’s Day Quinn and I are focusing on “Just Because” gifts. Little kids love to give small treasures to each other. We decided to make Salt Dough Heart Gifts for Quinn’s preschool friends. Quinn and I whipped up a batch of salt dough. The same dough we used for our salt dough ornaments.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE SALT DOUGH HEART GIFTS
2 C flour
1/2 C salt
3/4 C lukewarm water
paint (acrylic or tempera)
paintbrush
heart cookie cutter
HOW TO MAKE SALT DOUGH HEART GIFTS
Mix together the three ingredients. Roll out on a floured surface. Cut heart shapes.
Place shapes on cookie trays covered with parchment paper. Bake at 325 degrees F for about 1 hour. Let cool.
While we usually stick with washable tempera paint, Quinn loves when I bring out my acrylic paints for special occasions. Instantly he feels grown up.
I loved watching Quinn pick up each heart and think about his classmates as individuals. “Mama, this one is for Cale. I’m going to make it blue because Cale really likes blue.” “Emmy’s will be all red because that’s the real heart color.”
Two little sisters must have realized we were using special paints and woke up early from their naps to join in the fun. I love the difference in painting techniques between a four year old and a two year old!
On the back of each finished heart I wrote the name of the child and Quinn’s name.
Quinn is so excited to give his hearts to all his friends. I can’t wait to watch him!
