Liquid watercolors are my go-to art material for working with my own children and the students in my local art classes in West Hartford, CT. Process art is always at the heart of what I teach, but my children were eager to create some Halloween themed art. These Oil Pastel Resist Watercolor Paint Pumpkins are the best of both worlds.

HOW TO MAKE THE OIL PASTEL RESIST WATERCOLOR PAINT PUMPKINS
Prior to introducing the art activity cut out pumpkin shapes from the drop cloth. This drop cloth has quickly become one of my all time favorite art materials. (We used it to make this awesome fort and its my go to for large scale murals.) Set up diluted liquid watercolors in small jars with paint brushes. Set out a variety of oil pastels. We used shades of yellow, gray, black and white.
Next have the children use the oil pastels to create their jack-o-lantern faces. Explain to the children that the paint will not cover up the faces they create.
Once the faces are complete it is time to paint! Cover the whole pumpkin with the watercolor paints. My children loved seeing the paint soak into the drop cloth, but roll right off the oil pastels.
Once the pumpkins are painted let them dry completely. Aren’t they gorgeous?
