TIME TO MAKE A MONSTER

Prior to introducing the activity cut out a variety of shapes and sizes from the colored construction paper. I cut out large and small ovals, large rectangles, long, thing rectangles, small squares and triangles. Display the different shapes sorting by size. In addition to the paper shapes introduce a container of googly eyes and different colored pipe cleaners.

Introduce the activity by giving each child a large piece of white paper and a glue bottle (or a small container of glue with a paint brush). Guide your child through the building of the monster by talking about each body part. Does your monster have a head? Let’s look at the shapes. What shape is your monster’s head? What color would you like? Great, let’s glue the head on the white paper. Should the head go at the top of the paper or the bottom? Remember, you are there to help guide your child, but the ultimate decisions should be their own. Continue to talk through the different body parts until your child decides her monster is complete.
