Kid Made Clay Self Portrait Canvases

July 28, 2017 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

Oh what an amazing morning! Nothing energizes me more than watching one of my visions come to life and witness children fully absorbed and having fun. I heard lots of “This is so fun! Can we do it again?” as we worked on our Kid Made Clay Self Portrait Canvases. This project is the perfect addition to an All About Me Curriculum or makes the cutest gift!

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE KID MADE CLAY SELF PORTRAIT CANVASES

canvases– one per child
polymer clay– assorted colors

HOW TO MAKE THE KID MADE CLAY SELF PORTRAIT CANVASES

Prior to introducing this activity set up the canvases and a variety of polymer clay colors.  Give children the opportunity to explore the colors and look in the mirror to examine their faces. Encourage children to begin with the base of the shape of their faces. Make sure you have enough polymer clay in a variety of skin tones.

Give children the time and space to work on their faces. If a child gets stuck encourage him/her to look in the mirror to look for more details. The clay will stick right to the canvas. No need for any other materials. How cool is that?Kid Made Clay Self Portrait CanvasesKid Made Clay Self Portrait Canvases

You could hear a pin drop as the children worked. They were so into this project. I’m obsessed with how they turned out!

Did you cover these with something or bake them? I love this and am wanting to figure out how well they will keep and keep clean.

Hi Melanie- so glad you like them! No need to do anything to these. The polymer clay naturally sticks to the canvas. No need to do anything.

This looks awesome – no baking to cure it, does it stay soft indefinitely? Or does it harden on it’s own? Great idea for self portraits, thanks for sharing!
