A couple months ago I saw the coolest pillows being advertised on Facebook. Have you seen these mermaid pillows? So cool. I bought a few for my kids, but the were frustrated that it is hard to write letters, and I noticed what they really wanted to do was make huge sweeping motions with their arms. If you follow my blog you know I love sensory activities with ways to promote gross motor development. This Giant Mermaid Fabric Sensory Board is the perfect way to combine a fun sensory experience while strengthening arm and core muscles. Best part? It is so easy to make!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THE GIANT MERMAID FABRIC SENSORY BOARD
1 yard mermaid fabric– lots of choices, but this color combo is my favorite!
large piece of cardboard
hot glue gun- we like this low temp glue gun
HOW TO MAKE THE GIANT MERMAID FABRIC SENSORY BOARD
Cut out a large piece of cardboard roughly the size of the mermaid fabric. Squeeze the hot glue down the long side of the cardboard and glue the fabric into place. Next glue down the next side. It is important to stretch the fabric as you glue. Keep going until all sides are glue down.
Flip the board over and glue the fabric to the back side. Now it’s time to play! Initially I put the board on a table so that the children could explore it using side to side motions.
We also explored the Giant Mermaid Fabric Sensory Board standing up. This gave the children the opportunity to use up and down full arm motions as well as crouching and jumping up. Great for core and leg strengthening.
The Giant Mermaid Fabric Sensory Board quickly became a new favorite in our house and my Homegrown Studio classes!
