Decorate Your Own Teacups

September 2, 2013 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

A few months ago I saw a creative post on Pinterest that sparked my interest about how to decorate your own teacups with gold Sharpie markers. You can use sharpie markers to add a little color to plain white mugs. Instantly I thought of the stash of white espresso cups and saucers that have sat unused for 7 years on a top shelf in my kitchen. My kids love tea time these days and the espresso cups are perfect for small hands. Adding some artistic flair to the cups would be the perfect addition!

TIME TO DECORATE YOUR OWN TEACUPS!

Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Prior to beginning protect your table by covering with newspaper or pieces of paper. Give each child a teacup and saucer and a variety of markers to choose from. One of the concepts I am currently working on with my three children is having a ‘share pile’. All the markers were in the center and each child could take one at a time. When one of my children was done the cap needed to be put back on the marker and then put into the pile before choosing another color. I am encouraging my children to voice their need for a marker (or toy) when they want something intead of grabbing it. Such a hard lesson to learn! “Quinn, can I have the blue when you are done?” These moments promote patience, language development and turn taking.

My children loved the process of their artwork. When your children are finished creating their teacups place on a cookie tray in a 450 degree oven for 30 minutes. At the end of the 30 minutes turn the oven off but do not open it until the oven cools to avoid cracking the teacups and saucers. Once cooled they can be used and washed like you would any other dishes. I absolutely adore the childhood whimsey our new teacups add to tea time. My children love drinking out of them!

For Decorate your own teacup, you used sharpies, could paint be used as well and still be able to be used for drinking out of?

It would have to be paint that is specifically for use on porcelain.
