One of my children’s favorite activities is to act out the stories in our books. There are no need for elaborate props. Our living room or a kid’s bedroom works as our stage. My current role as the only one who can fluently read makes me the perfect narrator. And my children’s love of fantasy worlds magically transforms them into all the storybook characters we need. Dramatic Play is an essential component of an Early Childhood Curriculum. Best part? Your children are most likely already naturally succeeding at this skill. I’ve rounded up 10 Children’s Books That Promote Dramatic Play for you and your little ones to enjoy together.
Prior to acting out a book it is best that your children are familiar with the story. Take the time to snuggle up on a couch or gather a group on your classroom rug and enjoy one of the books below. Next assign roles. If a child is feeling too shy to participate have him be an “audience member”. This is a fantastic role to make everyone feel included. Read the story and have the children act out the movements and repeat the character’s lines. So much learning is occurring in these moments! Dramatic Play promotes language development, gross motor skills, creativity, teamwork, patience, public speaking and literacy development. Don’t forget to be silly! Children love when you enter their world of whimsy!
