After the success of our Rock Bugs I was eager to do another rock inspired project. This time I connected literacy by creating Alphabet Rocks. It is a simple, easy to create idea that spans many developmental abilities.

TIME TO MAKE ALPHABET ROCKS!
Our local reservoir has an abundance of rocks so on an early morning family stroll we collected a variety of smooth stones no bigger than my child’s palm. I wanted 52 rocks so that we could spell out a variety of words. We washed and dried them like we did with our Rock Painting activity and Rock Bugs. Sudsy water is the perfect, easy to set up sensory activity for kids.
Using a black permanent marker I carefully printed an upper case letter on one side of the rocks and the corresponding lowercase letter on the other side. This is an easy way to help children gain practice in connecting the uppercase with lowercase letters.
HOW TO USE ALPHABET ROCKS
I presented the rocks to my children with a stack of word cards. Each child had an index card with her name on it and a corresponding photograph. In addition to the name cards I created other word cards for my 4 year old. Each word card had a corresponding picture cue to aid recognition.
My kids loved exploring the different rocks. We used them to create words but my little builders also spent time creating structures, lining them up and enjoying the different textures. At the end of the play session I put the basket of rocks with word cards on an easy to access shelf so that my children can enjoy them again.
