Easy Construction Paper Spring Murals

April 7, 2014 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

We are finally feeling the Spring weather!  The sunshine is warming our faces, the birds are chirping and the beginnings of flowers are beginning to pop up.  We recently read Planting a Rainbow by Lois Elhert and were inspired by the gorgeous colors of Spring flowers.  With simple construction paper we made our own Easy Construction Paper Spring Murals!

color exploration
language developmentPrior to introducing the art project, cut shapes from colored construction paper.  I cut long thin green rectangles,  green leaf shapes and various types of colored petals.  I taped a long piece of white butcher paper on the lower part of the wall.

I introduced the activity by reading Planting a Rainbow by Lois Elhert.  We looked at all the beautiful flowers and colors.  “Would you like to make our own Spring flower mural?  Look at all the different papers we have!  We can use the paper shapes to make flowers!”

The girls are very excited about seeing our grass after a very long winter of snow!  They were eager to use the green rectangles to make grass.  Because this was our first time glueing to paper on a wall, I taught them how to squeeze glue on the back of a piece of paper and and then stick it where they wanted it.  Luca and Charlotte loved this process.

After they were satisfied with the grass we worked on adding colorful flowers.  We talked about how flowers have stems, leaves and petals.  The girls looked through the different paper shapes to create the flowers.

While my girls created the mural I focused the dialogue on what they were doing.  “Charlotte, look at the way you are choosing all purple petals to put around the yellow center.”  “Luca, your petals are all different colors.  Look, one is in the grass!”

By giving my daughters the freedom to explore and create they enjoyed making very unique flowers from the same materials.  We are loving the Spring inspiration!
