Make Your Own Piñata

Growing up all my birthday parties included a piñata. I loved making them with my mom and will never forget the super cute Strawberry Shortcake Piñata when I was three. Some of the traditions from my childhood continue at my children’s birthday parties. I hope their memories are as lovely as mine.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR OWN PINATA

newspaper cut into three inch strips
glue
water
2 large bowls
a balloon

TIME TO MAKE YOUR OWN PINATA!

Begin by blowing up your balloon and placing it on a bowl. Cut three inch strips of newspaper. Mix up a solution of 3 cups water and 3 cups of white glue. Stir until combined.

Dip a strip of newspaper in the glue mixture. Using your pointer and index fingers strip off as much excess liquid as you can and then smooth the strip over the balloon. Continue doing this until you completely cover the balloon. Repeat this process so that there are approximately three layers of newspaper strips covering the balloon.

Let dry for 2 or 3 days. Once completely dry and hard cut a small flap into the piñata and remove the popped balloon. Decorate with paints, tissue paper, markers- be creative! Bend a wire hanger in half and still into the hole. Fill the piñata with treats and then close the hole with packaging tape making sure the hooked part of the hanger remains outside of the piñata. We made Peter Pan for our Peter Pan Birthday Party. We painted the face and then I added details with markers and a felt hat. Attach rope or twine to the hooked part of the hanger and hang on a tree or a basketball hoop also works well!
