Every night my daughter goes to sleep needing the verbal reassurance that I love her no matter what. I look in the eyes of my little sensitive soul, bring her face close to mine and utter the same words over and over again, every single night. “There is nothing you could ever do that would make me stop loving you. I love you forever and always.” She hugs me tight and within a few minutes her body relaxes and she can fall asleep. We all want to feel safe in this world. Free to make mistakes in the comfortable presence of those who truly love us. This list is for my daughter and everyone else who needs a gentle reminder that you are loved. A CHAIR FOR MY MOTHER
When their apartment catches fire and burns all their belongings the amazing family in A Chair for My Mother has to start over. The mother works long hours coming home and longing to sit in a comfortable chair. The daughter doesn’t complain, working side by side with her mother after school, slowly adding coins to the jar that will eventually buy them a beautiful chair perfect for resting and snuggling after a long day. The love of family is the heart of this beautiful book by Vera B. Williams.
MAMA, DO YOU LOVE ME?
Mama, Do You Love Me? depicts the truth of parenting so well. Parents get mad and frustrated, but true parents never stop loving. Kids will test you and challenge you, but need to know that no matter what they are loved to the core.
LOVE YOU FOREVER
Admittedly, I am not a fan of the book Love You Forever, but I am including it in this list because the story behind this book is the true meaning of forever love, and I am also aware that this book is beloved in many homes. The author, Robert Munsch, originally wrote the book as a song to his wife as they mourned their two stillborn babies. Death does not take away love and for that reason I respectfully include this book in the Picture Books About Unconditional Love.
GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU?
How do you define how much a parent can love her child? Is it even possible? Children delight in hearing how much people love them. Guess How Much I Love You is a favorite in our home as the mother bunny and baby bunny express the abundance of love they have for each other.
GEORGE AND MARTHA
George and Martha are exactly the type of friends I hope my children have in life. These friends aren’t saccharin sweet, they are the real deal. They tell it like it is, stick up for themselves and love each other unconditionally with humor, compassion and strength. I love George and Martha so much they are in my Best Friends Book List too!
I LOVE YOU JUST THE WAY YOU ARE
Every parent should own a copy of I Love You Just the Way You Are . The little bear wakes up full of the grumpies, but the father figure stays calm the whole day, helping the child navigate what is proving to be a difficult day. At the end of the day the adult bear is clearly exhausted and in need of some rest, but before putting Bartholomew to bed utters the most important words a child can here, “I love you just the way you are.”
WHEN SOPHIE GETS ANGRY, REALLY, REALLY ANGRY
When Sophie Gets Angry, Really, Really Angry by Molly Bang usually finds its way on to book lists about general emotions or anger, but when I watch children listen to this book and respond I find they are connecting with the ending most. Sophie is upset and gets mad, running out of her house to calm down, but when she comes home her family is there. They don’t make her feel badly about herself or lecture her about what happened, they are simply there, with loving hearts and open arms to welcome her home. Children feel safe with this message and image of a secure family.
THE ADVENTURES OF BEEKLE
The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend is one of my favorite books in recent years. Sometimes unconditional love finds its way into waiting for that perfect friend, even if that friend is imaginary and begins in your heart. I can’t get enough of this book!
RED
Oh Michael Hall, I love you so for creating this book! I could spend a year creating activities and discussion topics based solely on Red: A Crayon’s Story. This book tells the tale of a crayon, Red, who never feels quite right. All around him crayons and other writing tools are trying to make him one thing, but no matter what he can never be who they envision him to be. Until one day when another crayon sees Red for who he truly is and he blossoms before their eyes.
