Favorite Kid Gifts for Little Builders and Architects

November 7, 2015 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

It is so much fun putting together lists of our all-time favorite toys and books!  I previously shared our favorites for little artists and today I’m sharing my Favorite Kid Gifts for Little Builders and Architects.  You all know I love building with blocks so this list might become my favorite!

BUILDING TOYS FOR LITTLE ARCHITECTS

WOODEN UNIT BLOCKS

Wooden unit blocks are the best investment you can make for your young builders. Spend the extra money to purchase a set made of real maple wood. You can learn all about the history of wooden blocks, how to use them in your home and classroom and what to look for when purchasing in my post here.

MAGNET TILES

There are many brands of magnet tiles available and I personally don’t believe you need to purchase the most expensive brand. We love the brand Picasso Tiles which are interchangeable with Magna-Tiles. We also have these Playmags which my kids are really enjoying as this set has trucks with wheels and gates.

LEGOS

Plain old LEGOS provide hours of creativity and fun. Everything is possible to create with these simple plastic bricks. A basket of LEGOS and time to explore provide so many learning opportunities for children.

MOBILOS

I’m on a mission for everyone to learn about Mobilos and get a chance to play with them. This open-ended building toy is the perfect addition to your building toys collection.

BRISTLE BLOCKS

Bristle blocks are another building manipulative that is often over-looked. I love toys that span many developmental ages. Children can start exploring these at 18 months and continue to build complex structures when they are 10. Well worth picking up a set or two!

MARBLE RUN

If you are going to purchase a Marble Run invest in one of the larger sets so there are enough pieces for older children to feel challenged. Marble runs provide open-ended exploration and problem solving.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS FOR LITTLE ARCHITECTS

HOW A HOUSE IS BUILT

How a House Is Built helps children understand the “hows” and “whys” of creating a home.

IGGY PECK ARCHITECT

Iggy Peck, Architect is perfect if you have a child like mine who will use anything to build with. I love the rhyming and humor in this book.

WHEN I BUILD WITH BLOCKS

When I Build With Blocks is perfect for the toddler/preschooler crowd. All about the imaginative play in the block area this book would also be great for adults interested in block building to read.

GAMES FOR LITTLE BUILDERS AND ARCHITECTS

JENGA

Jenga was the first game that popped in my head when brainstorming for this post. This classic game is all about building and strategy.

CRASH TOWER GAME

Similiar to Jenga, Crash Tower Game has children building with columns and then strategizing how to remove them without crashing the building dow. I find this game more difficult then Jenga and better suited for older children.

SUSPEND

Suspend from Melissa & Doug is all about balance, teamwork and a whole lot of fun!

There are so many ways to combine these gifts to make the coolest packages for your little builders and architects! Magnet Tiles and Iggy Peck, Architect are a fun gift or surprise your child with their first set of wooden unit blocks and the book When I Build With Blocks.

What would you hope to receive?

Love this list, the book really caught my attention, I didn’t expect those! The mobilos look super neat and similar to my son’s current fave which he calls his building set, I think it’s called a Junior engineer set. Thanks for the great ideas!
