Torn Paper 3D Collages

January 20, 2014 by Meredith @ Homegrown Friends

We use construction paper all the time. It is our go-to material for making cards and simple collages. For this project I wanted to challenge myself to use construction paper in a creative way. I thought it would be interesting to see if we could create a construction paper pulp to make three dimensional collages. After an initial failure, I am happy to say we figured it out and are now ready to share our Torn Paper 3D Collages with you!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE TORN PAPER 3D COLLAGES

multicolored construction paper
1/2 cup glue
1/2 cup
large cardboard rectangles (ours were approximately 6 inches by 12 inches)
food processor or blender

AREAS OF DEVELOPMENT ENHANCED THROUGH TORN PAPER 3D COLLAGES

sensory exploration
creativity
artistic expression
color exploration
language development

HOW TO MAKE THE TORN PAPER 3D COLLAGES

Begin with about 10 pieces of multicolored construction paper. Tear the paper into smaller pieces. This is great practice for fine motor development. Place the torn pieces in a food processor or blender. Note: if you do not have a food processor or blender you can just continue to tear the paper into tinier pieces. Add half a cup of water to the blender and blend until the paper is smaller.

Place the torn paper into a bowl. Add 1/2 cup white glue and stir until combined.

This mixture will be enough for about two children. Give each child a bowl of torn paper pulp, a spoon and a rectangular piece of cardboard. Children can use the spoon or their hands to form paper sculptures on the cardboard.
