This Sand Painting activity is a great way to explore texture and color mixing as well as a sensory experience if you children decide to use their hands. I love that the thickness of the sand paint creates 3D paintings.

HOW TO MAKE THE SAND PAINTING RECIPE
The ratio for the sand paint is approximately 1 part sand for every 1 part paint. Add the sand and paint to each container and then let your child mix them together.
The mixture should be very thick. Play with the ratios until you get a good consistency.
For my three children I created 2 containers of each color. I purposefully did not make enough for each child as I am also working on turn taking, verbally asking for things and patience so I try to create teaching moments whenever possible.
Give each child a piece of cardboard, sand paint and brushes for each container. Encourage your children to use a different brush for each paint color. Like with all art activities the focus should be on the process of the art work rather than the end result. Instead of stating “I like” or “It looks like a…” focus on your child’s actions. “Luca, I notice you made a new color when you mixed blue and red. What does it look like now?” “Charlotte, you are making large lines with the blue and a little bit of yellow.” You will be amazed at how simple statements like these give your child the opportunity to describe their own artwork.
Let the paintings dry.
